Gioachino Rossini: Petite Messe Solennelle

Holy Trinity Church from the south west

This semester we’re singing one of Rossini’s péchés de vieillesse (“sins of old age”), his Petite Messe Solennelle (neither petite nor particularly solennelle).

Here you can find some details of the rehearsals, and how we prepare for another excellent concert in Holy Trinity Church, Stirling on Saturday, 13th April.

Homework for rehearsals

Specific homework to come

  • Listen to the music as much as you can in the first few weeks of the semester.
  • Get to know the work so well that you can enjoy the rehearsals and, ultimately, the concert, aware that you’re part of something bigger than just your voice part.

Learning resources

We will provide choral scores at rehearsals.

voice icon MIDI files from Choralia.net

You can listen to each part and adjust the speed.

The following image shows the controls you have.

  1. Playback: click the arrow on the left to start or pause
  2. Tortoise & hare: Speed
Do change the speed. 100% is far too fast!
70% is more like the speed we’ll be singing at, so reduce the speed to 60% or less.
  3. The first set of speaker icons adjusts the balance between the voice part and the accompaniment.
  4. If you’re listening in stereo, the final slidebar moves the voice to the left or right.
